Where is my tax break?

Published by Sarah under Uncategorized Edit This

While I was reading some of the news online today I just happened to come across this article:

I.R.S. Plans a Deduction for Madoff Victims

Why is it that those rich people who got screwed over by a scam artist get a tax deduction and I don’t? Those people took a risk gambling in the stock market and were guaranteed high interest returns on hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, millions of dollars.  They gambled their money for crying out loud.

My husband and I have lost almost 50% of our 401k because of the crooks on Wallstreet and in the government.  We didn’t gamble or risk our money.  We put our money in his employer sponsored savings plan.  We don’t or didn’t have 100’s of thousands of dollars in there..but we were certainly trying to work towards that.  So, why is it they get a tax break for being stupid and not doing their due diligence - but - we the normal every day Americans who lost money due to no fault of our own don’t get the same tax break?

I really think that President Obama should rethink this position - assuming he even knows about it.  Isn’t Tim Geithner in control of the I.R.S.?  Is it possible many of these people are his friends and he’s trying to smooth them over like he did with those guys at AIG?

I guess another question I have is why didn’t I hear about this on the evening news last night?  Why is it that I have to just happen across it to learn about this?

I urge everyone to call their senators and congresspeople and urge them to not allow this tax break to the rich unless they plan on giving it to us as well for the losses we incurred in our retirement accounts.

So, it appears the economy is turning around.

Published by Sarah under Uncategorized Edit This

Yesterday President Obama announced that the economy does not appear to be in nearly as bad a shape as they originally thought.  The DOW was back up several hundred points again this week - it was up every day and did better this week than it has since November of last year.

Several banks have been announcing they don’t need the government bailout now.  Hmmm…perhaps Obama’s plans and his stimulus package actually are working?  Gee, how are those neo-cons going to explain that?  We all know they will find something else to take the credit for it rather than giving the responsibility to Obama and his team.

You go there Mr. President!  Keep up the great job.

Thank you,

Sarah

Obama’s transparency - you know this is driving those neo-cons crazy!

Published by Sarah under Uncategorized Edit This

Every time I read something new about Obama opening up more of the Bush files, it brings a smile to my face just knowing it drives those “other” guys crazy.  I found this story today -

Obama orders review of Bush legal maneuvers

Last week Obama released all the details concerning the torture at GITMO and we learned that there were over 90 videotaped interrogations that were destroyed. This latest report details how Obama is having some high level executive branch officials review all of Bush’s signing statements that he used to get around laws and all signing orders will be brought for review by Eric Holder.

I’m sure there will be a lot more news coming out about these signing statements that I am absolutely sure will prove that Bush circumvented the constitution.  I’m sure there are some neo-cons out there right now quivering and shaking with anger.  Obama is living up to his promise of transparency in government.  This is a much refreshing change compared to the iron-fisted rule of BusHitler.

Thanks,

Sarah

Looks like more Americans actually DO approve of Obama.

Published by Sarah under Uncategorized Edit This

Is there anybody else out there that reads the Huffington Post?  I find that to be a great resource and always has some really great articles.  I came across one today written by David Sirota titled Polls Show Big Majority Trust Obama - Fox News & Bill Kristol Say America Doesn’t Trust Obama .

Wow that’s a really long title - but - it does get the point across.  Essentially, it is a great piece about the hypocrisy of the right.  He so appropriately points out that the Wall Street Journal published an article showing that by far Americans trust Obama to do the right thing and that 87% of the population believes that Obama inherited this mess from Bush - and that he is not to blame for the continued downturn in the economy - but - on that very same day, both Fox News and Kristol try to say that America has no trust in Obama as is evidenced by the way the stock market is tanking.

So - which is it?  Do the American people trust Obama or not?  I would say the polls are correct.  As one of my commentors so appropriately pointed out in a previous discussion - don’t pay attention to the markets.  It is not a good indicator of the economy as a whole.  It is more of an indicator of the rich elite that can afford to buy stock.  It is not representative of we the working class.

Great post Mr. Sirota - way to call those wingnuts to the carpet.

Stimulus on its way!

Published by Sarah under Uncategorized Edit This

I heard today that almost $30 Billion from the stimulus package is being released this week to go to “select” states to start on this shovel-ready construction projects.  The report said that up to 150,000 jobs will be created as a result.  Personally, I think that is really great news.

One thing that I might have to agree with those “other” guys is that it probably is not enough.  Considering that the stimulus package was $787 Billion - $30 Billion for infrastructure doesn’t really seem like a lot.  Not only that, considering that there are now almost 7 million unemployed in this country, 150,000 really won’t make much of a dent.  Don’t get me wrong - when I put this in real numbers - $30,000,000,000.00 - that is a whole lot of money.  But, I have to wonder why it is only going to “select” states.  Shouldn’t this money be going to ALL of the states and employ more people?

I commend President Obama for getting this out there as quickly as possible.  They say this is being released 8 days ahead of schedule.  Just awesome.  But, like I said previously - I don’t think that is enough.  There should have been a lot more included for infrastructure.  Maybe they could have done away with some of those other frivolous projects like saving the marshland mouse in San Francisco or buying golf carts for the politicians.  I don’t see how those two projects will stimulate the economy.

This is a great start for Obama.  I’m hoping they can go back and re-allocate that money and divert it in to more projects like these shovel-ready construction jobs.

What are your thoughts?  Am I wrong on this?  I almost feel kinda bad for appearing to be negative.  I’m not though.  I think in this case I’m being a pragmatic American hoping that the money actually goes to stimulating projects.

Thanks,

Sarah

Could someone out there who is smarter than me explain this?

Published by Sarah under Uncategorized Edit This

So, while I was dropping my cards earlier today I came across a post at another site.  In the comment section someone mentioned something that got me thinking.  First, I’m not mentioning the person that brought this up because he’s kind of a jerk and I don’t really want to send people his way - I’m not mentioning the blog - although he’s an innocent bystander in this - because you would figure out who the person is and maybe head over to his blog once you got there.

In any case - he did say something that got me thinking.  But, I’m sure it can’t possibly be the way he is thinking so - I’m asking for you guys to see if you can explain this.  Don’t take this as an Obama bash as it has that potential if he’s right - so - here it is…

He says that since Obama has taken office there have been requests totalling $3.5 trillion.  When Obama took office - Bush left him with a deficit of $500 Billion.  Obama has stated that by 2012 he’s going to cut the deficit in half.  If that were true - then technically Obama will only be bringing the deficit down to $1.75 trillion which is still more than 3 times larger than when he started his Presidency.

Can that be right?  Wouldn’t that mean that Obama didn’t really reduce the deficit at all?  I don’t see how this other guy’s math could be correct.  It has only been a little over a month since Obama took over.  If this guy is right - with almost four years left there will certainly be more spending requests which would bring that deficit amount even higher.  I hope someone can explain this away because I would hate to think that guy is right about this thing.

As a side note - do you think if I got one of these I could drive my neo-con hubby out of his mind! :)

Thanks,

Sarah

Obama provides the HOPE he was talking about

Published by Sarah under Uncategorized Edit This

It was very refreshing last night watching Obama’s speech to Congress and hear a very clear message of hope for this country.  While I am generally an optimist all of his negativity was starting to weigh heavy.

However, it also made for a very interesting evening in my household.  As many of you may know if you read my about page or remember my first post - I live with one of those neo-cons.  I don’t think I’ve ever seen my hubby come unhinged as badly has he did last night while we were watching the speech.  I won’t go in to any details - but - It was like we were watching a football game or something - only this time - his side was losing.

He was doing a lot of jumping off the couch and yelling at the TV using some very choice expletives -if you know what I mean.  While I certainly got Obama’s message and I support all that he is trying to accomplish - it really incited some serious anger out of the hubby.  If he reacted that way I wonder if the rest of those nutjog neo-cons around the country reacted the same way?  I really don’t understand their outrage.

Personally, while I fully support Obama and his Presidency - as I was drifting to sleep last night thinking about the speech - the only thing that kept coming to mind was if my marriage is going to last 4 years of an Obama administration - let alone 8.  If things keep up this way - I’m gonna need one of these anti-aging kits real soon:

Thanks,

Sarah

You all just need to chill out and give it a chance!

Published by Sarah under Uncategorized Edit This

It is starting already.  The disenchantment of Obama.  The stock market sank to its lowest levels since 1997.  I expected those idiots on the right to start in on Obama - but - now there are people on our side beginning to blame him too?  C’mon people.  Give it a rest.  You voted for change.  You willingly walked in to that booth and pulled the lever for Obama and change.

You know - change doesn’t happen over night after eight years of severe damage to this country.  Obama just signed that bill in to law last week.  Money is just now beginning to flow to the states to get things going.  Can you give it a rest for a while?

I’m beginning to understand the phrase the “right” use all the time “drive-by media.”  It appears that a lot of you people out there are just too impatient and are only listening to the sound bites.  You know - even George Bush (ptew) said that the war on terror was going to be long and that the war won’t be won over night.  Well - the same thing goes for this war on recession.  It is going to take time to pull this thing off.

I’m just asking you all - have confidence in Obama - after all - you voted for him overwhelmingly.  Let’s be the one’s to turn to those Republicans in the near future and say “See, I told you so.”  Your negativity will lead to self-fulfilling prophecy.

Chill out!

Thanks,

Sarah

Finally, We have a good stimulus bill!

Published by Sarah under Uncategorized Edit This

So, failed tax policies under eight years of George W. Bush causing an economic meltdown, and Congress finally puts a stimulus bill together that benefits we the people and creates 3.5 million jobs - and the Republicans decided to vote against it across the board.  Thank God there are at least three sane Republicans in the Senate who voted for it.

The Republicans are hold outs because they want more tax cuts.  It’s those stupid policies of tax cuts that caused this problem in the first place.  Tax cuts don’t work.  Creating jobs does.  So what if there are things in the bill that probably shouldn’t be.  Chuck Schumer is right - most of us Americans really don’t care about a little bit of pork as long as we get some real legislation in there that does something for Americans.

There is money in there to build up the infrastructure of this country and to improve our healthcare system.  I hear a lot of people complaining about the $300 million for the green-powered carts for our political leaders.  Do they not realize that someone has to build them?  Do you not think that $300 million going to our automakers isn’t somehow stimulating the economy?  It keeps our auto workers in business and all the downstream businesses in business?

What about the creation of all those ‘green’ jobs by putting money in to alternative energies instead of that carbon busting oil industry?  Anyone who is against this bill is either completely uninformed or just doing it because it’s Obama’s bill.

Well - when it turns out that this is the most successful stimulus package since the New Deal and FDR - we can turn to those idiot obstructionist GOPers and tell them - get lost!  We don’t need your kind around these parts no more!

Thank You,

Sarah
